Students and staff have worked very hard to make HSHB the outstanding school it is and we are all proud of our achievements.
The Hellenic School of High Barnet (HSHB) is a thriving and independent Greek school that has been teaching children within our community since 1977. Today, we have over 150 children that attend our school, from Nursery through to A Level, where they learn key aspects of the modern Greek language, such as reading, writing and speaking. We aim to achieve high standards in education as we prepare all our children for GCSE and A Level examinations. We are proud of our successes in examinations, the results are high, and continually improving. Our school is also recognised for having a warm and welcoming environment that allows all our children to learn and enhance their knowledge of our Greek and Cypriot cultural lifestyles, through joyful activities that include singing, dancing and poetry. The HSHB is located within the premises of East Barnet Secondary School, making us equidistant from Southgate High Street and East Barnet village, and a mere 5 minutes walk from Cockfosters. We meet in person on Saturday mornings, and have additional online lessons on Wednesday evenings for children in Year 3 and above.
We are very proud of our Greek school and the happy atmosphere we have created to encourage the love of learning for our Greek language and heritage.
As we approach our 50th anniversary, it is clear that the needs of our community have developed, but our success is built on a solid foundation where our children can be part of a school that is proud of our Greek heritage, and confident of our place in the community for generations to come.
Our teaching staff are comprised of highly qualified educators, all knowledgeable experts in the Greek language, bringing a wealth of academic credentials and extensive teaching experience to the classroom. Beyond their qualifications, our teachers are passionate about education and deeply committed to inspiring and supporting every student’s learning journey. All our teachers and staff are fully DBS checked, in line with our health and safety procedures, ensuring we maintain a safe teaching environment for all our children, from nursery through to A Level.
If you are looking for a welcoming, exciting and community Greek school for your child, we invite you to contact us and arrange a visit where you can meet our teachers and learn more about what we offer. We also welcome you to meet our parents committee, who can share their own personal experiences of the school and why they chose the Hellenic School of High Barnet for their children.
We offer a free, no-obligation in-person trial to children of all ages, where they and their parents get to experience what our school has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you to the Hellenic School of High Barnet.

Rooted in the ancient times, Greek traditional dances are an important part of Hellenic culture, a living practice that reinforces our identity and constitutes an integral part of our school program. The children attend weekly dance lessons and learn about Greek and Cypriot history and customs which they demonstrate through performances and fun activities organised with the Parent Committee.
The HSHB Parent Committee is very active and with the support of parent volunteers provide a weekly tuck-shop.
We actively encourage parents to become involved. As a registered non for profit charity, the School is managed by a committee of parents, who are primarily responsible for maintaining the correct Governance and Management procedures so that it operates legally and ethically, whilst ensuring we create a safe, comfortable and inspiring learning environment that supports all our students.
The school is here to serve our Greek and Cypriot community, and it relies on the services and voluntary support of parents to succeed. We have a great committee of parents that are active in the support of the school, but we always welcome further help from new and existing parents. Being part of the committee is a truly valuable role, not only is it hugely rewarding and great fun, it gives you a real insight into what goes on behind the scenes at the School, and offers all members the opportunity to have a genuine impact on your child’s education by helping shape a school that meets the nees of our children.

Headmistress
Miss Jenny Petridou has been teaching for over 26 years in both Greece and the U.K. She is a qualified teacher for GCSE and A Level, and has a particular interest in leading the curriculum for both Latin and Greek as part of her full time job. She is also a respected Examiner, and is recognised for her work with the major examining boards of the U.K, including Edexcel for modern Greek, and OCR for Latin and ancient Greek. __«Γηράσκω αεί διδασκόμενος»__ *Σόλων* A phrase that defined my life both as a student and as an educator. Knowledge is a journey full of adventure. It does not only entail the vocabulary of a language or the grammatical structure. It is not only related to the certificates that reward the journey. This is the main message conveyed to our pupils. We wish the kids and the parents to feel that being a member of our school society means much more. Besides achieving their academic goals (GCSE and A Levels) it means the pupils have the opportunity to learn about our culture and the customs (ήθη και έθιμα), they get an understanding of the variety of our dialects (κυπριακά, ποντιακά, βλάχικα). It means they enjoy being a part of our big family and are willing both to learn and contribute. As the Headmistress of the Hellenic School of High Barnet I would like to invite you to join us and witness yourselves the unique experience we would like to offer to your children and your families.

School Highlights We teach children from nursery class through to A Level. In our lower school, we follow the curriculum set out by the Cyprus Educational Mission (KEA) which includes developing reading, speaking and writing of the modern Greek language and emphasises the importance of giving all children exposure to Greek and Cypriot culture including singing, dancing and poetry.
We recognise that Greek is not the first language of many of our students and so we have extended the GCSE course over three years (rather than two). The first year is now devoted to preparation of the curriculum to facilitate a successful GCSE outcome and make sure each child achieves its full potential. If your child wishes to continue to A Level, we will support them with our dedicated and qualified teaching staff. We are one of few schools in the north London community that continues to offer this.
Our teaching staff is comprised of highly qualified educators, each bringing a wealth of academic credentials and extensive teaching experience to the classroom. Beyond their qualifications, our teachers are passionate about education and deeply committed to inspiring and supporting every student’s learning journey.
